Emerson's "wide-ranging leadership background, extensive senior executive exposure and broad political and public policy experience will be invaluable to Finning," Doug Whitehead, chairman of Finning's board, said in a statement.
Emerson, a former chief executive at lumber company Canfor Corp, was elected as a Liberal member of Parliament but switched over to the Conservatives when they took office in early 2006, to become trade minister, and then foreign minister.
He did not seek reelection in the Oct. 14 federal vote.
Other past roles Emerson held include president and chief executive of the Vancouver International Airport Authority and chairman and CEO of Canadian Western Bank.
Vancouver-based Finning is the world's largest Caterpillar equipment dealer. It sells, rents and provides customer support services for Caterpillar equipment and engines in Western Canada, the United Kingdom, and parts of South America.
It counts oil sands, mining and power systems companies among its main customers.
Finning's stock is down around 56 percent so far in 2008, largely due to its exposure to the mining and energy sectors, which have taken a hit from the global economic downturn as demand for commodities has waned.
The shares were down 7 Canadian cents at C$12.72 on the Toronto Stock Exchange early Wednesday.
