Beginning Jan. 1, cable customers will be charged 99 cents a month if they choose to continue to receive a paper bill through the mail. If a customer opts to go with an online, or e-mailed bill, the company will give the customer a 99-cent monthly credit on his or her Time Warner bill, a company official said.
"We're trying to entice customers to go green," said Jon Herrera, Time Warner Cable regional vice president for communications in San Antonio. Other companies have moved to paperless bills, he said, and "we decided we're at a point with our technology" to offer customers the paperless option.
Customers can continue to pay their bills in the way they choose, Herrera said: by regular mail, online, by phone or at payment stations.
Time Warner customer Eric Natera,
36, said, "I think they're sort of forcing people into it." But, he said, that's fine with him because he prefers the paperless fashion.
Natera said he pays about 80 percent of his bills online and is getting a declining number of paper bills.
Many companies provide a way to pay bills online now but don't charge a penalty to continue receiving a bill through the mail.
Herrera said an increasing number of people have Internet access at home or work, or can receive e-mails through their cell phones.
But customers don't need Internet access to go paperless, Herrera said.
A customer can call Time Warner at 800-222-5355 and get their bill details and pay their bill through an automated phone system, he said. Online and automated phone payments can be made with no fees. However, a customer who pays a bill by phone using a customer service representative is charged $5. A customer also can go to one of Time Warner's two payment locations, at 7010 Airport or 129 Pitts, and view his or her online bill, Herrera said.
