Weston, FLA, Dec 09, 2008 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- CATS | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- ON Semiconductor, a supplier of high performance, energy efficient, silicon solutions, has unveiled the second device in a new line of temperature sensors recently acquired from Catalyst Semiconductor.

The new CAT34TS02 combines a 12-bit (plus Sign bit) digital output temperature sensor with 2 kilobits (Kb) of Serial Presence Detect (SPD) EEPROM for DDR3 applications in high-speed PCs and laptops, graphics cards, servers, telecom equipment and base stations, environmental control systems and industrial process control equipment.

The CAT34TS02 is compliant to JEDEC specification JC42.4. It measures and records the system temperature approximately 10 times per second, with readings compared to three trigger limits stored in the internal memory registers. Readings can be retrieved by the host system via the I2C/SMBus interface, and over- and under-limit conditions are signaled on the open-drain EVENT pin.

For general-purpose temperature sensor applications, integrating the temperature sensor with non-volatile EEPROM eliminates the need for external memory to store sensor and threshold configurations. Additionally, the CAT34TS02 non-volatile memory retains custom-configured sensor and threshold values at power-up, resulting in what the company called a simple, space-saving and cost-effective solution.

The integrated 2 Kb SPD EEPROM is internally organized as 16 pages of 16 bytes each, for a total of 256 bytes. The EEPROM features a 16-byte page write buffer, supports both the Standard (100 kilohertz - kHz) and Fast (400 kHz) I2C protocols, and features Permanent and Reversible Software Write Protection, defined as standard for all DDR3 DIMM modules.

Samples are available now, the company noted. Projected lead-time for production quantities is currently 6 to 8 weeks ARO.
