The report, "The Impact of Interference in Reverse Link on Data Throughput, Minutes of Use and Capacity" examines the effect of interference on data transmission, as well as voice. "A one decibel increase in interference can reduce data throughput 20 to 30 percent," said Amr Abdelmonem, ISCO International chief operating officer and chief technical officer.
Abdelmonem pointed to unprecedented global cellular growth and system complexity in recent years - and the challenging environment this creates for cellular operators who are now confronted with more noise and unpredictable interference.
The new report attributes increased interference to the proliferation of CDMA, GSM and WCDMA networks, many of them in adjacent regions. Interference can also be caused by "intermodulation" due to high-power out-of-band signals. According to the report, this kind of interference is most common in dense urban areas but can also exist along country borders, coastal areas, base station hoteling sites and distributed antenna systems (DAS).
"ISCO's adaptive interference mitigation dANF solutions provide Spectrum Conditioning that adapts easily and automatically to our customers' environment," said Abdelmonem. "The automatic mitigation of interference enables consumers to place more calls and increase data throughput rates. For our carrier' customers, more calls equal more minutes, equal more revenue. And consistently faster data throughput means more cell phone use, amounting to more revenue from happy customers."
