Aksh will provide IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) feed for mobile TV on MTNL's 3G service. Mobile TV, based on Aksh's advanced MPEG 4 technology, will enable subscribers to view all channels at high resolution and speed, Aksh Optifibre Ltd's Strategic Initiatives Head Ashok Wahi told PTI.
Aksh-MTNL Mobile TV will be available on MTNL's 3G Network for the first time in India. The Mobile TV subscriber would need a compatible 3G phone and MTNL's 3G subscription to tune in anywhere, anytime.
"We've got lots of top-notch channels to choose from on mobile TV like Doordarshan, Neo Sports, CNN and NDTV, and could soon include music channels like MTV, V Channel, and ETC and entertainment from Star, Sony, Colors etc," he said.
Wahi said 3G handsets like N96, Samsung Omnia and iPhone can are mobile TV compatible.
Aksh is already a partner to state-run BSNL and MTNL for the IPTV. MTNL launched IPTV six months ago and has 17,000 subscribers in Delhi and Mumbai.
Although the government is yet to come out with Mobile TV norms, the company is getting itself ready to launch the service once guidelines are out.
According to a survey, 84 per cent of mobile phone users are interested in using mobile TV service provided it is commonly available and affordable, and about 60 per cent of them would prefer watching the content they get on TV at home. News, sports, music videos and Game shows are the four major content types that the surveyed users would prefer to watch.
The survey also states that in the first year of operation, mobile TV could reach a penetration level of five-six per cent of the total mobile subscriber base in India, as per the survey.
