The closure, according to market observers, in part resulted from the shrinking customer base and the continuous slipping sales. The closed Shanghai outlet saw its sales slump to JPY 2.3 billion in 2007, 63.9% as much as the peak JPY 3.6 billion in 1996.
Isetan will have four stores in Tianjin, Chengdu, Shenyang and Shanghai after closing Huating Isetan Shanghai. Notably, the department store operator has to put off its plan to open its first store in Beijing this autumn.
