Park developer CAN DO Inc. president W. Kevin O'Donnell said Tootsie Roll Industries Inc. is interested in a property in the Humboldt East section of the park spanning Luzerne and Schuylkill counties.
"They're looking at a 240,000-square-foot building in Humboldt East," O'Donnell said.
The Chicago, Ill. candy maker will create approximately 35 jobs and start off as a distribution center, he said. The name recognition of Tootsie Roll would help the economic development agency draw more such tenants. The company that makes a variety of candies reported 2007 sales of $493 million.
Company president Ellen Gordon was in planning meetings Tuesday and unavailable for comment, according to her assistant.
If it does locate within the park it will join companies such as Archer Daniels Midland, the Hershey Co., George Weston Bakeries, Cargill Meat Solutions, General Mills, Gonella Frozen Products and the Coca Cola Co.
O'Donnell brought up the company's interest during a work session of the Luzerne County commissioners. He appeared before them to request an extension of the Keystone Opportunity and Keystone Opportunity Expansion zones within the park beyond the current 2010 expiration. Companies that locate in the zones receive state, local, school district and county tax abatements for a limited time in return for development of the properties.
A building matching the size stated by O'Donnell is located on Forest Road and is in a KOZ.
The developer of the site, The Exeter Property Group, said it cannot comment on transactions that have not been executed.
