The software, which can run on Windows, Linux, OS X and Solaris or OpenSolaris hosts, offers developers and enterprise users the ability to run multiple, virtualised operating systems on a single PC. The hosted operating systems can be networked together to build, test and run cross-platform, multi-tier applications.
Sun said that xVM VirtualBox is a key element in its virtualisation portfolio. The software, which can be downloaded for free from the project website (http://www.virtualbox.org), has been enhanced with new features such as support for OpenGL, new bridged network configurations to improve network performance and additional support for SCSI storage.
Enterprise subscriptions are also available, starting at USD30 per user per year, which includes 24/7 premium support from Sun's technical team.
