The certificate is part of a program to standardise the technical basis for cross-border rail transport launched by the European Railway Agency (ERA). The certification is applicable to the entire TRAXX product family and was granted in just three months. With it, the TRAXX platform now conforms to the technical specifications for rail vehicles for cross-border transport three years ahead of the end of the legal transition period. "This is a great success for our Division and for engineering in the whole company. Our intensive cooperation with the ERA on this project began while the agency was still agreeing on the new TSI standards," said A...ke Wennberg, President, Division Locomotives and Equipment Bombardier Transportation. Wennberg continued: "We observed the standards right from the beginning in the development and construction of TRAXX locomotives. With this certification, we can now offer our customers, who operate across borders, an even more efficient homologation process. TRAXX, already a model of success, is now even better." The TRAXX locomotive family is designed for efficient, sustainable operation and is distinguished by its modular concept. The locomotives are suitable for use in freight and passenger transport on national and international routes and on all networks. Since its introduction to the market, more than 1,400 TRAXX locomotives have already been sold. In line with the new TSI standard, special flameproof materials are used to provide fire protection in the driver's cab and redundant drive systems are installed, which become effective in case of an emergency. In addition, previously existing fire safety planning and certificates were incorporated seamlessly into the homologation process. Locomotive interoperability is gaining importance within the European Union in view of the increasing amount of cross-border rail transport and the liberalisation of many markets, above all in the freight corridors. The variety of standards, laws, technical and infrastructural requirements in the EU member states has, up until now, prevented the complete accreditation of rail vehicles. The Europe-wide structure of the different TSIs provides a solution to this. The TSI SRT, which came into effect on 1 July 2008, encompasses all aspects which are important for safe rail operation in tunnels. It affects the structural subsystems, the 'infrastructure' and the 'vehicles'.
