In the final UFC event of 2008, the Nogueira-Mir matchup is one of several on a stacked pay-per-view card that also features former policeman Forrest Griffin in his first light heavyweight title defense against Rashad Evans and Wanderlei Silva against Quinton Jackson.
Nogueira (31-4-1) and Mir (11-3) were coaches for season eight of Spike TV's The Ultimate Fighter. It was one of the most watched mixed martial arts shows on television that set up the much-anticipated heavyweight fight, expected to be one of the best of the season.
They also share a common bond of overcoming life-threatening accidents. At age 11, Nogueira was nearly crushed by a truck and left for dead. He was in a coma for four days and needed 300 stitches to put his body back together. Mir survived a motorcycle accident that kept him out of action for 18 months.
"We are friends but when we fight we will want to kill each other, but that's just business," Mir said. "After the fight, we are still friends. We have been through a lot and know what it is to fight for your life. I have idolized Nogueira a lot, he is one of the best heavyweights in the world. I am going up against my idol who happens to still be competing at a high level."
Nogueira lives in Miami for most of the year while most of his family lives in Pompano Beach including his mother, Marina. He owns an academy in downtown Miami and realizes every victory helps provide for his family.
"For sure this is a big fight for me and my future," said Nogueira, the interim heavyweight champion. "I am in very good shape, and I know what it is to fight. This is about survival of the fittest."
Seven other bouts are scheduled on the live pay-per-view card that begins at 10 p.m. Suggested retail price is $44.95.
