Jackalopes goaltender Dan McWhinney saved 36 of the 38 shots he saw, with New Mexico's Christopher Robertson breaking a 1-1 tie with just more than five minutes to play in the Central Hockey League game between the Southwest Division rivals.
Robertson scored off a Craig Macdonald assist at 14:45 of the third to give New Mexico a 2-1 lead and Aaron MacInnis provided the final margin with an empty-net goal with just six seconds to go.
Perhaps the key goal came at 11:04 of the first period when Jamie Herrington gave the Scorpions (11-16-2, 24 points) a 1-0 lead by scoring a shorthanded goal.
Sebastien Thinel tied it up just 50 seconds later off a Mike Lesperance assist, but the special teams lapse ended up costing the Jackalopes with Robertson's go-ahead goal in the third. The Jacks also finished just 1-of-7 on the power play.
The Jackalopes (21-8-2, 44 points), lost for the second time in three games, return to play at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Amarillo. It will be the third time in less than a week that the Jackalopes and Gorillas have played.
