The historic dwelling was originally erected on the corner of California and Chester avenues in 1909. Later, it was purchased by Otis Coppock, a reserve sheriff's deputy, who transported it in 1953 to the corner of Rosedale Highway and Calloway Drive, according to a museum media release.
Keith Wheeler next purchased the house from Coppock in 1954 and rented it out until 1966, when husband and wife Arlin and Lavern Hill purchased it, according to museum director Carola Enriquez. The couple ran an upholstery business from the property, Enriquez said.
Mrs. Hill died in 2005 and left the house to her children, who donated it to the museum, where it was moved April 20, Enriquez said. It now forms a part of the museum's permanent collection.
Restoration and preservation work on the Lopez House continues through the efforts of volunteers and the Kern County Museum Foundation. For information on how to donate to the restoration and preservation of the Lopez House, please visit movethishouse.org.
