That's not going to happen anytime soon unless KWQC's parent company, Young Broadcasting, requests it, according to Tom Larsen, Mediacom spokesman.
"If they say cut them off, we have to cut them off," Larsen said, noting that Young failed to renew a retransmission agreement earlier in December with the Dish Network and requested its content be removed.
Dish did not carry any Young stations for four days.
Larsen said Mediacom and Young have been renegotiating a new three-year arrangement since October. The existing agreement ended New Year's Eve.
"We're still renegotiating with literally hundreds of stations," Larsen said. "We are not having many problems, but Young is an exception."
Larsen is a vice president for legal affairs and public relations for the nation's eighth largest cable company, which operates mostly in smaller U.S. cities and towns.
In a statement, KWQC said Mediacom, has elected not to accept the station's proposal.
"We will continue to work diligently in the hope that Mediacom will complete an agreement for carriage of KWQC-TV," affiliate said.
Meanwhile, Mediacom, which has cable franchises in Burlington, Keokuk and Danville, will continue to carry Viacom programming. Viacom, which includes Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and 16 other channels, also is negotiating with Mediacom and other cable carriers.
"What happens is at the last moment these stations start running crawls across their screens, pressuring viewers to call their cable provider," Larsen said. "But we've been talking since October. We intend to keep KWQC as part of our lineup."
