Company representatives from the Sedalia office and the corporate headquarters in Quincy, Ill., were out for the week and could not be reached for comment.
Linda Christle, executive director of Economic Development of Sedalia and Pettis County, said the Sedalia plant, which employs more than 250 people, appeared to be safe from the cutbacks.
She said the layoffs appear to be part of efforts to consolidate some of the overseas operations into the company's American plants, which she drew from recent conversations with Gardner Denver management.
"I haven't had any indication that the Sedalia plant will be adversely affected," Christle said.
Gardner Denver announced several restructuring initiatives in response to "deteriorating global economic conditions and the integration of the company's October 2008 acquisition of CompAir Holdings Limited," according to a company statement.
The company announced a hiring freeze, strict controls on discretionary spending, the closure of a manufacturing facility in the United Kingdom and the reduction of its salaried workforce.
The company notified about 9 percent of its employees that their positions would be eliminated within the next nine months, with most of the affected employees expected to leave the organization by the second quarter of 2009.
Gardner Denver expects the initiatives to reduce costs by about $7 million in 2009.
"The rapid decline in industrial production in the U.S. and Europe has resulted in reduced levels of capacity utilization and deferred purchases of capital equipment such as compressor packages," Barry L. Pennypacker, Gardner Denver's president, said in a statement.
"The decline in demand has translated into lower revenues, operating margin and diluted earnings per share. At present, we are uncertain how long orders will remain at these depressed levels. ... We are pressing ahead with our efforts to lean out our manufacturing and administrative processes, reduce overhead and streamline operations to improve efficiencies."
Gardner Denver is a worldwide manufacturer of reciprocating, rotary and vane compressors, liquid ring pups and blowers for industrial and transportation applications. The Sedalia plant is part of the company's compressor division, which produces compressed air and gas products and systems, providing pneumatic power and a comprehensive line of positive displacement blowers and vacuum pumps.
