After the sale began at 10 a.m., 7,000 tickets ranging from $62 to $400 were snatched up within five minutes, said Charlie Dayton, director of communications for the Carolina Panthers. Fans could purchase tickets with Ticketmaster either online, over the phone or at ticket centers.
The No. 2 seed will face either Minnesota, Arizona or Atlanta at 8:15 p.m. Jan. 10 at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, which seats 73,500, in second round of the NFC playoffs.
The last time the Panthers hosted a playoff game on Jan. 3, 2004, single-game tickets sold out in less than an hour after they went on sale, according to WXII News 12.
"We are fortunate to be in a great market," Dayton said about the quick sale in an otherwise grim economy.
"Traditionally, there's always been a tremendous market, and it goes very fast," said Phil Youtsey, director of ticket sales for the Carolina Panthers.
"It's another sign of the support we receive in the Carolinas," he said about the quick sell-out.
There are undoubtedly a number of fans who did not land the prized tickets, but if you scour the Internet for the best ticket deals, be aware of potential scams.
"Sometimes you can find them on the computer, but you've got to be careful," Dayton said. "We don't recommend that."
Youtsey said a secondary ticket source the Panthers recommend and guarantee is Ticketexchange through Ticketmaster, accessible on www.panthers.com. Prices on this site range from "face value up to "What are they thinking?' prices," Youtsey said.
The Better Business Bureau says counterfeit and fraudulent ticket sales usually aren't a big problem in this area.
"It's not something that we get much on locally," said Fred Howes, public relations director with the Better Business Bureau of Central North Carolina in Greensboro. Howes said most complaints are filed in larger metro areas where the companies are based.
Web sites like Craigslist listed tickets for sale as high as $1,900. Other sites like www.gotickets.com had tickets posted from $170 to $750.
