The four-part seminar will be each Tuesday in January, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Decatur Utilities auditorium on Central Parkway Southwest.
The timing of the seminars could not be much better.
In November, 3,165 Morgan County residents were collecting unemployment. The county's unemployment was 5.6 percent, almost double the 2.9 percent rate of a year ago.
Numerous area layoffs
Numerous companies have laid off employees, including Solutia, United Launch Alliance, Decatur General Hospital, 3M and Cerro Wire. BASF plans to close its Decatur plant this year. Solutia and General Electric hope to sell their Decatur plants in 2009.
A shrinking job market, said Abbott Wood, district manager of the Decatur Career Center, makes it especially important for job applicants to sell themselves effectively.
"The seminars are for anyone who wants to learn a little about how to find a job, whether they're unemployed now or not," said Wood.
Wood said several human resources officers from local companies, coordinated by Human Resources Officer Scott Landgraf of Solutia, are volunteering their time for the programs.
"Scott read the article (in the Nov. 30 edition of The Daily) and it touched a nerve," Wood said. "He and some of his colleagues decided it was time to do something."
Each seminar will address different aspects of the job-search process.
"The idea is that they build on each other," Wood said.
The firstsession, on Tuesday, focuses on how those seeking a job in difficult economic times can keep a positive mental outlook. The guest speaker, Wood said, will be retired District Judge David Breland.
The other three sessions, Wood said, will address topics that include:
--What employers want.
--How to shine in interviews.
--How and when to apply for a job.
--How to write an effective resume.
--How to succeed in interviews.
Seating is limited, Wood said, and attendees must register for the free program.
