Independence Holding Co. Leads Friday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Rises 1.75%

OLDWICK, N.J., Jan 05, 2009 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- IHC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Friday, Jan. 2, at 730.19 (+1.75%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, 14 rose and one declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were Independence Holding Co. (+22.99%) and Eastern Insurance Holdings (+11.46%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were CRM Holdings (-12.94%) and Conseco (-9.07%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the Asia/Pacific Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 766.04 (+2.44%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Old Mutual plc (+9.64%) and Axa S.A. (+7.51%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Novae Group plc (-3.93%) and Amlin plc (-1.89%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1087.47 (-0.60%). Leading the AMBAP were Dongbu Insurance Co. (+10.34%) and Singapore Reinsurance Corp. (+6.90%). Trailing the AMBAP were Korean Reinsurance Co. (-4.63%) and QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (-0.81%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 881.72 (+1.73%). Leading the AMBGR were AXA S.A. (+7.51%) and Singapore Reinsurance Corp. (+6.90%). Trailing the AMBGR were Korean Reinsurance Co. (-4.63%) and Flagstone Reinsurance Holdings (-3.58%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 965.98 (+0.70%). Leading the AMBGB were Maiden Holdings Ltd. (+4.47%) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (+2.76%). Trailing the AMBGB were Brown & Brown (-2.34%) and Aon (-1.23%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 570.75 (+2.54%). Leading the AMBGML were AIG (+7.64%) and Axa S.A. (+7.51%). Trailing the AMBGML were HCC Insurance Holdings (-1.50%) and Hannover Rueckversicherungs AG (-0.62%).

The Global Nonlife Insurance Index (AMBGNL) closed at 1012.03 (+0.88%). Leading the AMBGNL were Eastern Insurance Holdings (+11.46%) and Dongbu Insurance Co. (+10.34%). Trailing the AMBGNL were CRM Holdings (-12.94%) and EMC Insurance Group (-7.76%).

The Global Life Insurance Index (AMBGL) closed at 622.81 (+2.43%). Leading the AMBGL were Independence Holding Co. (+22.99%) and Old Mutual plc (+9.64%). Trailing the AMBGL were Conseco (-9.07%) and National Western Life Insurance (-4.95%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 1019.84 (+1.35%). Leading the AMBUPC were Eastern Insurance Holdings (+11.46%) and Affirmative Insurance Holdings Inc. (+8.28%). Trailing the AMBUPC were CRM Holdings (-12.94%) and EMC Insurance Group (-7.76%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 180.42 (+2.20%). Leading the AMBUML were AIG (+7.64%) and Atlantic American Corp. (+6.76%). Trailing the AMBUML were HCC Insurance Holdings (-1.50%) and Delphi Financial Group (-0.22%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 635.37 (+1.85%). Leading the AMBUL were Independence Holding Co. (+22.99%) and Lincoln National (+5.89%). Trailing the AMBUL were Conseco (-9.07%) and National Western Life Insurance (-4.95%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 706.67 (+2.29%). Leading the AMBULH were Independence Holding Co. (+22.99%) and Triple-S Management Corp. (+8.61%). Trailing the AMBULH were Conseco (-9.07%) and National Western Life Insurance (-4.95%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 781.97 (+2.67%). Leading the AMBUH were Triple-S Management Corp. (+8.61%) and Cigna (+5.58%). Trailing the AMBUH were Unum Group (-0.91%) and Humana (-0.03%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 952.38 (+0.70%). Leading the AMBUB were Maiden Holdings Ltd. (+4.47%) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (+2.76%). Trailing the AMBUB were Brown & Brown (-2.34%) and Aon (-1.23%).
