TOSHIBA TO BUY IN PANELS FOR NEW SOLAR POWER SYSTEMS BUSINESS
SOPW | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Japanese firm Toshiba Corp.
(TSE:6502) on Monday unveiled plans to manufacture and sell
industrial-use solar power generation systems by using solar
panels made by outside companies, with all other components to
be produced in-house.
The products are to be sold under the Toshiba brand, with
annual sales of 200 billion yen (US$2.1 billion) targeted for
fiscal 2015.
The firm established the Photovoltaic Systems Division on
Thursday, a dedicated segment that will consolidate under one
roof all the necessary technologies that are currently handled
by different group organizations.
Toshiba already makes many of the components for solar power
generation systems, such as inverters and transformers. But its
full-scale entry into this market was hampered by the fact that
it does not manufacture solar panels, the key component. It
currently logs just several hundred million yen in sales of
solar-power-related equipment.
