O'Neill, a 28-year veteran of the bank, will continue to run the holding company.
Bruce Lauritzen, chairman of First National of Nebraska, said O'Neill brings "a wealth of knowledge about the entire organization" to his new job. O'Neill has had oversight over all the parent company's bank charters.
Johri, 58, joined First National in September 2005 as head of its credit-card division and nine months later was promoted to president of the bank.
Lauritzen said Johri had "engineered the significant growth and sophistication" of the credit card division, had introduced the FNBO online savings account, revitalized the branch banking operation and led the bank's entry into the Iowa market.
First National has branches in Council Bluffs, Des Moines and Glenwood.
Johri and his wife, Indrani, will move back to Greenwich, Conn., where they have maintained a home.
Johri was an executive at JP Morgan Chase in New York and Citigroup before joining First National.
