A Yamada Denki subsidiary is to take over Tsukumo's stores, which currently total 13 nationwide and employs roughly 250 workers.
The unit is expected to continue operating most of the stores, excluding unprofitable ones, under their existing names. The handover is scheduled to take place in early March, with details such as a price for Tsukumo's operations to be fleshed out soon.
Tsukumo filed for bankruptcy protection from creditors under the Civil Rehabilitation Law on Oct. 30 with liabilities totaling roughly 11 billion yen (US$118 million). Yamada Denki seeks to enhance its online PC sales and corporate sales by tapping into Tsukumo's strong brand recognition among PC aficionados.
