Tootsie Roll Industries Inc., which produces the famous chocolate candy and other products, announced Wednesday it would open a new distribution center in the Humboldt Industrial Park, Ellen Gordon, Tootsie Roll's president and chief operating officer, said in a press release.
The 240,000-square-foot center in the new, 200-acre Humboldt East section, Hazle Township, will be the distribution point for Tootsie Roll's 36 brands to East Coast locations, Gordon said.
The building, constructed on Forest Road almost two years ago by developer Equilibrium Equities, Conshohocken, was sold to a partnership of Exeter 490 Forest LLC, Exeter Operating Partnership LLC, and Exeter Industrial Reit I. Those companies sold the building to Tri Sales Co. for $12,240,000.
Gordon declined to comment further Wednesday. It was unclear when hiring for the facility would begin, or how many jobs would be created, but distribution from the new local facility is expected to begin in late March, according to Tootsie Roll.
"We're very happy to have a world-class company like Tootsie Roll in our industrial park," said E. Thomas Sandrock, chairman of the board of CAN DO Inc. "We have heard such great things about the company and welcome them as a member of our ever-growing list of companies that have found Greater Hazleton to be a great location for economic development."
Gordon said several factors led the company to choose the Hazleton area.
"Company officials from Chicago spent a considerable amount of time in Hazleton over the past six months studying the area, its workforce and what it has to offer our company," she said. "Our vice president of distribution himself stayed in Hazleton for more than 10 days, just getting to know people without them knowing who he was or why he was there."
John Majors, Tootsie Roll's vice president of distribution, said once the company takes root, "we're there for the long term."
"The combination of location, workforce and the Keystone Opportunity Zone incentives we found in the Hazleton area made us confident that this is the perfect location for Tootsie Roll," Majors said.
