Revised earnings estimates led Wall Street to end last week on a sour note, with the Dow dropping 1.64%, while the S&P 500 slid 2.13% and the Nasdaq droped 2.81%. Earnings season numbers will begin to trickle in in the coming week, and there is a fear that the results could be much worse than expected. If corporate America suffers with the rest of the US, expect the bloom of the new presidential administration to fade quickly. Economic figures of note in the coming week include a reading on December retail sales and the consumer price index, and investors are braced for bad news. Lately there have been stark reminders that the economic crisis is snowballing, so any market rallies may be due to optimism about President Obama's plans or related to the large government stimulus package in the works. It's unlikely, however, that those rallies will be enough, as the crisis may deepen prior to Obama's inauguration speech.
