Mr Cescau has been group CEO of Unilever since 2005. Prior to that he was chairman of Unilever PLC and vice chairman of Unilever NV, and has held the position of group finance director and foods director. Mr Cescau retired from Unilever in the beginning of January 2009. He has also been a non-executive director of Pearson since 2002. Mr Cescau will be a member of the audit and remuneration committees.
David Reid, chairman of Tesco, said: "I am delighted that Patrick is joining the Tesco board. He is highly esteemed in the business world and brings with him many years' experience of both developed and emerging markets. His international perspective and knowledge of consumer goods will be very valuable to our board."
