Customers at the Rose Street retail store should see no hiccups or changes as a result of the bankruptcy filing, an associate for the company said this morning. She said the company has not yet determined if it will close any stores.
Gottschalks has operated in Walla Walla since 2000, when it opened in the former J.C.Penney anchor site at the Blue Mountain Mall.
It is one of three anchor tenants that remains at the site after redevelopment of the property started in 2008, resulting in the demolition of the mall around Gottschalks, Sears and Shopko.
In a statement issued by California-based Gottschalks, corporate officials said they felt the Chapter 11 filing was "a necessary action" to address the company's financial challenges.
"The company has no comment on the sale process beyond what's in our (press) release at this time," the announcement read.
"We will continue business as usual and our stores will continue to operate as normal throughout this process as we deliver to our customers quality product, friendly service and great value as always."
