Jan 16, 2009 (The Daily Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- GOTT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- With Gottschalks' future looking grim, local residents are forced to prepare for the worst.

After the Fresno-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Wednesday, many locals are waiting to hear what will happen to the Gottschalks in Woodland.

After meeting with officials from the County Fair Fashion Mall, City Manager Mark Deven said there's no official word on what will happen with the local store.

The store currently leases space at the mall and is required to give significant notice before ending the contract.

"The mall hasn't received that," Deven said.

Despite the lack of information about the local retailer, Deven and others are operating on the assumption that the store will in fact close.

Kristy Wright, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber was definitely saddened to hear about loss of another large company in Woodland, especially from an 18-year member of the chamber.

"Anytime you lose a large retailer like Gottschalks, it's going to impact other businesses," Wright said. "We don't have a lot of apparel stores."

Wright said many people drive to Woodland in order to shop at Gottschalks, and the loss of another store might force residents to go out of Woodland for their shopping.

"It's lucky Burlington Coat Factory will be there," she said.

She's not the only person who will be sad to see Gottschalks go.

Woodland resident Dolores Martinez has shopped at Gottschalks for close to 30 years. She was upset to hear that the store might close.

"I shopped here a long time; I hope they don't go," she said.

This is especially disappointing for Martinez who said she can't find the same quality of clothes anywhere else.

"All my friends say that this is the best place for clothes," Martinez said.
