PSEB interviewed more than a dozen candidates over the past two days to recommend GAIL Director (Marketing) Tripathi as its number one choice to Petroleum Minister Murli Deora, informed sources said.
It recommended GAIL Director (Planning and Business Development) A K Purwaha as its second choice for the post of Chairman and Managing Director of the company.
The post of Chairman and Managing Director will fall vacant on July 1 this year when the present incumbent U D Choubey retires on supperannuation.
54-year old Purwaha, who turned around Mumbai CNG retailer Mahanagar Gas Ltd as managing director during 2001 and 2006, has been director incharge of GAIL's business development activities including transnational pipelines like those from Iran and Turkmenistan since November 1, 2006.
While, Tripathi, a mechanical engineer, is the youngest director on company board. 49-year old Tripathi, who worked on the company's most prestigious pipeline projects and steered its marketing initiative, will have almost 11 year stint at the helm of affairs. Tripathi joined GAIL board in July 2007.
Deora has the right to select from these two candidates the most suitable persons for the top job and forward it to the Cabinet Committee on Appointments for ratification, they said.
