The giveaway began Tuesday and runs as long as supplies last, or through Jan. 26, whichever comes first. All local Gottschalks and Macy's are participating.
A 2003 California lawsuit filed against department stores and cosmetics manufacturers alleged the businesses conspired to keep prestige cosmetic prices high. The case was settled with no wrongdoing admitted. The result was a $175 million giveaway.
Eligible customers will get one free piece of makeup or fragrance worth from $18 to $25.
Customers do not have to prove they were part of the suit -- people who bought cosmetics between May 29, 1994 through July 16, 2003 -- but they must sign a log book indicating they are owed part of the settlement, according to a Gottschalks spokesman.
