Financials led the early losses, while Nanya Technology led DRAM chipmakers down after the company disclosed parent net loss of 35.229 bln twd for 2008 against a 2.458 bln loss in the previous year.
Investors were cautious in the last trading session of January. The Taiwan bourse will be closed from tomorrow for the Lunar New Year. Trading will resume on Feb 2.
At 9.04 am, the weighted index was down 70.49 points or 1.66 pct at 4,172.12, after opening down 77.93 points at 4,164.68.
Turnover was 3.02 bln twd.
The financial sector was down 2.06 pct and electronics fell 1.68 pct.
Nanya tumbled 0.26 twd or 4.63 pct to 5.36.
