Conseco Leads Wednesday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Rises 2.84%

OLDWICK, N.J., Jan 22, 2009 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- MSIGY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Wednesday, Jan, 21, at 616.92 (+2.84%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, 13 rose and two declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were Conseco (+21.17%) and Delphi Financial Group (+19.53%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings (-10.68%) and Sompo Japan Insurance (-7.83%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the Asia/Pacific Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The U.S. Insurance Index (AMBUS) closed at 608.56 (+5.73%). Leading the AMBUS were Conseco (+21.17%) and Delphi Financial Group (+19.53%). Trailing the AMBUS were Affirmative Insurance Holdings Inc. (-6.79%) and CRM Holdings (-5.70%).

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 579.19 (-0.90%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Old Mutual plc (+6.86%) and Prudential plc (+5.96%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Hannover Rueckversicherungs AG (-5.74%) and Swiss Reinsurance (-4.79%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 924.29 (-4.15%). Leading the AMBAP were Tower Ltd. (+1.21%) and Dongbu Insurance Co. (+0.71%). Trailing the AMBAP were Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings (-10.68%) and Sompo Japan Insurance (-7.83%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 746.48 (+0.47%). Leading the AMBGR were Max Capital Group (+13.86%) and XL Capital (+12.50%). Trailing the AMBGR were Hannover Rueckversicherungs AG (-5.74%) and Swiss Reinsurance (-4.79%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 903.10 (+2.96%). Leading the AMBGB were Maiden Holdings Ltd. (+11.69%) and AmTrust Financial Services Inc. (+7.27%). Trailing the AMBGB were eHealth Inc. (-1.10%) and Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (-0.53%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 447.03 (+0.78%). Leading the AMBGML were Delphi Financial Group (+19.53%) and Hartford Financial Services Group (+17.20%). Trailing the AMBGML were Hannover Rueckversicherungs AG (-5.74%) and Zurich Financial Services AG (-2.48%).

The Global Nonlife Insurance Index (AMBGNL) closed at 894.26 (+1.44%). Leading the AMBGNL were Max Capital Group (+13.86%) and Presidential Life Corp. (+13.13%). Trailing the AMBGNL were Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings (-10.68%) and Sompo Japan Insurance (-7.83%).

The Global Life Insurance Index (AMBGL) closed at 518.06 (+6.40%). Leading the AMBGL were Conseco (+21.17%) and Genworth Financial (+19.29%). Trailing the AMBGL were Munich Re (-3.15%) and China Insurance International Holdings (-3.06%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 923.13 (+3.56%). Leading the AMBUPC were Max Capital Group (+13.86%) and XL Capital (+12.50%). Trailing the AMBUPC were Affirmative Insurance Holdings Inc. (-6.79%) and CRM Holdings (-5.70%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 155.03 (+9.52%). Leading the AMBUML were Delphi Financial Group (+19.53%) and Hartford Financial Services Group (+17.20%). Trailing the AMBUML were Atlantic American Corp. (0.00%) and AIG (+5.84%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 549.54 (+12.14%). Leading the AMBUL were Conseco (+21.17%) and Genworth Financial (+19.29%). Trailing the AMBUL were Kansas City Life Insurance (-0.10%) and Independence Holding Co. (+1.89%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 615.59 (+8.49%). Leading the AMBULH were Conseco (+21.17%) and Genworth Financial (+19.29%). Trailing the AMBULH were Kansas City Life Insurance (-0.10%) and Independence Holding Co. (+1.89%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 685.44 (+5.52%). Leading the AMBUH were Unum Group (+16.21%) and Triple-S Management Corp. (+9.23%). Trailing the AMBUH were UnitedHealth Group (+3.68%) and WellPoint (+3.71%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 888.04 (+3.13%). Leading the AMBUB were Maiden Holdings Ltd. (+11.69%) and AmTrust Financial Services Inc. (+7.27%). Trailing the AMBUB were eHealth Inc. (-1.10%) and Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (+1.28%).
