Jan 23, 2009 (Richmond Times-Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- CC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- List of terminated jobs

Circuit City Stores Inc. will eliminate as many as 1,903 positions reporting to its corporate headquarters when the retailer closes its doors for good, according to papers the company filed with the state yesterday.

About 1,500 to 1,600 of those jobs are in the Richmond area, company spokesman Bill Cimino said.

Regional and district manager positions scattered throughout the country are included in the 1,903 tally.

The Henrico County-based consumer electronics retailer announced last week that it was liquidating its assets and shutting the company down. All of its 567 stores are to be closed by March 31.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice act filing only affects employees reporting to corporate headquarters.

Separate notices will go out to employees working at the chain's stores.

Some of the positions cut include district and regional managers that oversee store operations.

The stores are now being run by the liquidation companies.

The positions are detailed in a 17-page filing with the Governor's Office for Workforce Development. They range from dispatcher to chief financial officer.

The filing shows 1,248 positions will be cut at the company's headquarters on Mayland Drive in Henrico County. This number includes the positions for the regional and district operations.

An additional 342 will be eliminated from its call center near Thalbro Street.

The E-Commerce division, which manages the chain's Web site operations, accounts for 252 of the layoffs. An additional 61 positions will be terminated from a department working on a new computerized cash register system.

An exact closure date has not been set, but the company said layoffs will occur by March 21 or within two weeks after.

Dozens of employees were told this week that their services were not needed. Others are expected to be told to leave in the weeks to come.

The employees will be paid until March 21, the company has said.

Circuit City filed for bankruptcy protection on Nov. 10, but the chain struggled through the holiday sales season as it tried to restructure its operations. It announced last Friday that it would liquidate its stores and shut down.

As of last week, the company employed 34,000 U.S. workers.
