The utility and leaders of the Utility Workers Union of America and International Chemical Workers Union extended the current contract until the end of the month to give union members time to ratify a tentative new wage and benefits package, representatives for labor and management said..
Last weekend 3,000 workers voted by a -1 margin to authorize their unions to call a strike if negotiators failed to resolve their differences. It was an unusual move by the utility's unions, which had not taken such action since a one-day walkout in 1993.
Late last week as the contract expiration date approached, the Gas Company said it was prepared for management employees to maintain uninterrupted service to its customers throughout Southern California in the event of a strike.
"We are pleased after months of negotiations and concessions on both sides that we were able to reach a tentative agreement that both the Gas Company and our unions are pleased with," Gas Company spokeswoman Denise King said..
The proposed contract calls for a 10.5 percent increase in wages over three years. It also preserves the pension plan currently in place and key features in sick time benefits that the company previously had sought to cut during the negotiations, the unions reported.
John Duffy, vice president and lead negotiator for the Utility Workers Union of America, credited Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in large part for averting the strike. "His office was in regular contact with the workers and the company.," he said in a prepared statement that also acknowledged support the unions received from Los Angeles County Federation of Labor's Executive Secretary-Treasurer Maria Elena Durazo.
Duffy said a summary of the terms of the tentative contract would be mailed with ballots to union members with the intention of having them collected and counted by February 28.
