PANAMA CITY, Feb 03, 2009 (The News Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ASOU | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Atlantic Southeast Airlines officials have told Airport Authority members that ASA will add a weekly flight to Cincinnati beginning this month.

The flight, which will originate in Cincinnati, will take place Saturdays and begin Feb. 14. ASA official Robert Trend said the flight is seasonal and likely will last through the summer.

"Historically, it has been good for us and goes out fairly full," Trend said.

Trend said ASA's outgoing traffic increased by about 2.25 percent in 2008, while incoming passenger traffic increased by 6.26 percent.

With many vacationers cutting back on air travel in the down economy, Trend attributed the increase into Panama City to the popularity of the destination.

ASA is a Delta Connection carrier that provides daily service from Panama City to Atlanta. It eliminated daily service to Orlando in mid-2008.

The extra flight to Cincinnati comes as good news for the airport.

Although ASA officials said both their incoming and outgoing passenger traffic increased in 2008, Airport Executive Director Randy Curtis said overall passenger traffic at the airport was down by about a half-percent. Total passenger traffic was down by 6.53 percent in the month of December alone, Curtis said.

Delta Airlines contracts with ASA for Atlanta flights, while Northwest Airlines travels from Panama City to Memphis, Tenn., via Northwest Airlink. Airline officials announced a merger of Delta and Northwest last year and indicated that flights to Memphis would continue.

In addition, Jeff Dealy, program manager for the airport relocation project, told Airport Authority members last week that construction on the new Panama City-Bay County International Airport near West Bay was about 44 percent complete.

The new airport has a May 2010 planned opening date.
