Journal Register Co. will shutter a third local weekly newspaper in as many weeks. The company also closed The Town Meeting in Elk Rapids and The Citizen-Journal in Boyne City last month, all part of the company's Mount Pleasant-based Morning Star Publishing Co. division.
Gale Miller, business manager at the Bellaire-based newspaper, confirmed Wednesday's edition of the Antrim County News would be its last. It's a disheartening situation, she said.
"I'm sorry for myself and I'm sorry for my community," Miller said.
The Antrim County News has been printing for 61 years and 28 weeks, she said.
Other JRC publications that remain in the region include the Grand Traverse Insider in Traverse City and The Leader and Kalkaskian in Kalkaska, among other shoppers.
Two employees will lose their jobs when the Antrim County News closes and a third will be transferred to the Kalkaska newspaper, Miller said.
The newspaper had offices in Bellaire and Mancelona.
Morning Star Publisher Al Frattura did not respond to a request for comment.
Bellaire resident Craig Smith belongs to the usual coffee crowd at Mrs. Pete's Restaurant in Bellaire, where a group of about 20 frequently gather to read the paper and discuss local happenings. He was shocked to learn about the newspaper's closing.
"It's a sad day, obviously, that we will lose one of our weekly papers. It's a milestone and it's difficult to see," Smith said. "You need local papers. Unfortunately, it's sad to see some of the local papers can't seem to survive."
The Antrim Review is a competing weekly newspaper in Bellaire that will continue to print, said John Tarrant, that newspaper's publisher. A newspaper's loss often is more difficult to bear than with other types of business because of a paper's impact on communities, he said.
"It's a shame to see it go away this way," Tarrant said, but added it's not a surprise after the company's other area newspaper closures.
The remaining newspaper will have to "pick up the slack" for local news readers, said Bellaire Village President Butch Dewey.
JRC owns 20 daily newspapers and nearly 200 non-daily publications, but closed or sold dozens of publications across the country in recent months.
