Chicago Tribune Phil Rosenthal column: Chicago Sun-Times editor Michael Cooke resigns

Feb 12, 2009 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- SUTM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Michael Cooke, editor of the Chicago Sun-Times, announced Wednesday he is leaving the paper at the end of the month to be the Toronto Star's editor.

Cooke told his staff by memo a day after former Sun-Times colleague John Barron was appointed publisher by parent Sun-Times Media Group. In Toronto, Cooke will reunite with former Sun-Times Publisher John Cruickshank, now publisher of the Star.

Sun-Times Media on Tuesday installed former Dallas Morning News General Manager and American Consolidated Media founder Jeremy Halbreich as its new board chairman and interim chief executive to address the company's financial challenges.

The Sun-Times did not immediately name Cooke's successor.

Cruickshank and Cooke came to Chicago together from separate Vancouver papers to jointly oversee editorial operations at the Sun-Times in 2000. Cruickshank was eventually upped to publisher.

Cooke left in January 2005 to become editor of the New York Daily News. But Cruickshank welcomed him back the following December. Cooke was moved into his current post of editor in chief of all the company's area publications (including the Sun-Times) in September 2006, while Barron, who had succeeded Cooke as Sun-Times editor, became executive editor of the company's area papers en route to becoming general manager.

"We will miss Michael and the exceptional flair and creativity that he brought to Sun-Times news coverage," Barron said in a statement.

Besides naming Barron and Halbreich to new posts Tuesday, Sun-Times Media gave Chief Operating Officer Rick Surkamer added responsibilities as president.

Cooke, 56, whose newspaper career began at age 17 in his native England, wrote that the chance to rejoin both the Star, his first North American paper, and Cruickshank, was "irresistible."

Acknowledging the Sun-Times' financial woes, Cooke told staffers he believes the next two years "will be difficult and painful for the newsroom," but he noted local businessmen have privately expressed "a strong interest in keeping the paper flourishing."

Sun-Times Media cut $50 million in annual expenses last year and seeks deeper cuts this year to stem losses. The company's Post-Tribune reported Wednesday that its building in Merrillville, Ind., is for sale, as is the home of the Crown Point (Ind.) Star and Shopping News.
