"In our eyes the dealer is closed for business. He still has his franchise but if he doesn't have cars to sell or is unable to service cars we don't consider it a dealer in operation," Bradley said.
Lucas Ford owner Sean Gouhin could not be reached for comment. Numerous phone calls placed to the Greely Chapel Road dealership were unsuccessful and no one answered phone calls Tuesday and Wednesday.
General Manager Ryan Swaney's cell phone no longer had Swaney's voice greeting and only said "Lucas Ford." A message left on that phone was not returned Wednesday
Bradley did not know how many cars were removed from the dealership.
Ford corporate is recommending customers needing service or looking for a car to purchase choose another dealership in Lima or nearby.
"We don't consider Lucas Ford to be in operation," Bradley said.
Lucas Ford, however, remains a private dealership and it's up to the owner to close even if there's no cars to sell, no service department and no employees, Bradley said.
Ford Motor Credit Co. spokeswoman Meredith Libbey said she cannot comment on business dealings with a possible client but did say even if her company no longer does business with a dealership doesn't mean that dealership is closing. A dealership could find another company to handle its financing, she said.
Lima Police Department Maj. Tony Swygart said police in January changed to another dealership for its service needs after Lucas Ford let all of its service technicians go. The department had a car at Lucas Ford it had to have towed to another dealership for the repairs to be finished, Swygart said.
Gouhin purchased the dealership from Chris Lucas in 2008. Lucas owned the dealership for about two years. Gouhin, despite layoffs and rumors he was closing the dealership, said in a letter a month ago he was not closing and it remained in business.
"Due to current economic conditions and the accompanying decline in the automotive retail industry and the economy as a whole, it has become necessary for Lucas Ford to take significant costcutting measures, including employee layoffs," Gouhin wrote in the letter.
