The Kabuliwalas
We're really thrilled that all the other South Asian bands will play here but you'll agree special wah-wahs are required for the Aryan Band. It's the first ensemble to come out of music-hungry post-Taliban Afghanistan (Afghans were punished by the Taliban if they were caught listening to a tape in their cars).
Showstoppers: These dus bahadur naujawaan -- Abdul Ghafar Mehdyar (band leader, keyboardist and lead vocalist), Abdul Salam Jawid (electric guitarist and lead vocalist number 2), Mujtaba (drummer), Mohammad Mohsen (percussionist), Ahmad Nasir (pianist and back up vocalist), M. Aslam (clarinet player), Mohammad Kazim (saxophone player), Abdul Basir (bass guitarist), Mustafa (rhythm guitarist and back up vocalist) and Siddique Ahmed (violinist and manager) got together somehow despite no money, practice place or time to rehearse.
Better believe it! Drawing inspiration from Sufi singers, they specialise in Persian and Pashto numbers, using clarinet,
guitars drums, Latino percussion, bass, congo, guitars and keyboards. Dil dikhao Dilliwaalon, they're playing today.
Loha Thok
He's here! Roger Sinha, BIE (born in England), the son of an Indian father and Armenian mother, and choreographer of taalis-in-the-west contemporary dance pieces like Loha and Thok. If you missed him yesterday at the Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, zip across the Mooli Field, well, the TRIFKAY: The River Formerly Known As Yamuna, to the Narenjayan Studio on Wednesday, February 25.
