All five Bears dropped into the consolation side of the Class 1A/3A bracket in the first day of competition Friday at the Santa Ana Star Center, and all five lost by pin. Four of those five pins came in the first period.
It was a rough start for the first-year program.
"This is where the rubber hits the road, up here," Cloudcroft coach Ed Faust said after his team completed the second round. "We didn't want that, didn't like that. But it is reality, and we're not done. They gave it their all, but you have to take a look at what they're up against being a first-year program. No excuses here, and we're going to fight through. It's just tough. This is a tough place to play."
Only 215-pounder Sam Nichols forced a second-round match out of the opening period, falling to Wingate's Marty Notah with 1 minute, 14 seconds left in the third period. After a scoreless first period, Notah broke the tie with an escape and later took Nichols to the mat for two more points. Notah chose the standing position to start the third and scored a takedown before pinning Nichols.
Four of Cloudcroft's wrestlers earned automatic spots in the quarterfinals with first-round byes.
Nichols competed in and won the Bears' only first-round match, beating Robertson's Joe Crespin via pin in 5:07. The match went three periods as both wrestlers failed to score in the opening period. In fact,
Nichols only shot at Crespin two or three times and Crespin didn't shoot at all.
Nichols started the second period in the top position and rode Crespin through most the session. Nichols managed to roll Crespin over in the final moments of the period and recorded two points on a two-second near fall.
In the third, Nichols worked quickly and scored a reversal 13 seconds in for a 4-0 advantage. He put Crespin's shoulders to the mat 44 seconds later.
To kick off the second round for the Bears, Eli Gallegos dropped into the 112-pound consolation bracket following his first-round loss to Mike Cantu of St. Michael's. Cantu built a 5-0 lead on a takedown and a five-second near fall in the early moments of the match, then pinned Gallegos with 37 seconds left in the first.
Following the delay between the 112 and 160 pounds, coach Faust had a whirlwind spurt with four back-to-back matches, three of which were on one mat.
At 160, Skylar Davis gave up five points on a takedown and near fall to Robertson's Dmitri Almanzar before losing by pin with one minute left in the opening period.
After Nichols' loss, Ben Faust followed with a loss by pin at 189. Faust trailed 3-2 before falling to West Las Vegas' Manuel Silva in 1:39.
Dallas Brown then lost his heavyweight match to Bloomfield's Anthony DeHerrera in 1:10 after trailing 5-0.
Davis was the only Bear eliminated after the first day. He gave up a 6-0 lead to St. Michael's Ryan Gorman and was pinned at the 3:10 mark. Nichols, Faust, Gallegos and Brown will wrestle in today's consolation quarterfinals.
Things aren't finished quite yet, coach Faust said.
"I'm basically going to tell them that I'm very proud of them, not just today, but during the last four months," he said. "What we've been going through, it's time to take it to the next level and fight back. We're not going to give up. We will not roll over for anybody. If we get beat, it's because the opponent was better."
