An African Queen statement, signed by the company's chairman Irwin Olian, spoke of "favourable results from the ongoing field exploration and geochemical sampling programme". African Queen has nine prospecting licenses in Fingoe, covering a total area of about 1,359 square kilometres. The release states that "the focus of the Fingoe Project has been methodical stream sampling of the region with follow-up of gold and base metals anomalies by field geologists who conducted further reconnaissance soil sampling, mapping, rock sampling and trenching. The program has been very effective in identifying several priority sources of anomalous gold within the region". It adds that "Due to the potential nugget effect of coarse gold, additional follow-up samples have been collected 100m upstream and downstream from the original positive samples. Where a coincidence of gold in all three samples was found to exist the target has been given priority with respect to its rating and importance". "A number of significant gold in soil anomalies" (i.e. more gold than expected) were discovered, with one of these promising areas covering 100 square kilometres. "Further sampling and trenching is planned for the coming months in order to develop drill-ready targets for core drilling later this year on structurally-controlled gold targets", the release said. Olian declared "We are delighted that our regional exploration program of geochemical sampling and related work on the Fingoe Belt has now generated several key targets for further investigation. We intend to get on with further follow-up work as soon as possible with a view to identifying discreet drill targets for potential primary hard-rock gold deposits". To date, African Queen's southern African operations have been concentrated on diamonds in Botswana and Namibia. Its operations in Mozambique are carried out through its subsidiary PAM Mocambique Lda. The encouraging results in Tete, follow a disappointment last year when African Queen tried to revive the Braganza gold mine in the central province of Manica. It relinquished its interest in this project when reconnaissance drilling indicated the absence of "a commercially viable primary deposit in the area". African Queen is a relatively new company formed in April 2008 as a spin-off from the acquisition of the Pan-African Mining Corporation (PAM) by Asia Thai Mining (ATM). ATM kept PAM's interests in Madagascar, but transferred its Botswanan, Namibian and Mozambican interests to the newly formed African Queen Mines. For full details for AQ click here.
