Legal & General Group Leads Thursday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Rises 1.28%

OLDWICK, N.J., Feb 27, 2009 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- LGGNY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Thursday, Feb. 26, at 512.42 (+1.28%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, seven rose and eight declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were Legal & General Group (+27.51%) and ING Groep N.V. (+20.06%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were Phoenix Cos. (-29.29%) and HealthSpring (-22.64%).

The European Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the U.S. Health and HMO Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) +10.77%

Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) +8.37%

U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) +3.08%

U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) +2.68%

The U.S. Insurance Index (AMBUS) closed at 496.52 (-2.29%). Leading the AMBUS were Aflac Inc. (+17.69%) and AIG (+13.04%). Trailing the AMBUS were Phoenix Cos. (-29.29%) and HealthSpring (-22.64%).

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 492.31 (+10.77%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Legal & General Group (+27.51%) and ING Groep N.V. (+20.06%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Lancashire (-0.92%) and Paris Re Holdings (-0.41%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 805.40 (-1.73%). Leading the AMBAP were Fuji Fire & Marine Insurance (+13.73%) and Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance Co. Ltd. (+4.50%). Trailing the AMBAP were Singapore Reinsurance Corp. (-3.85%) and Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance (-2.88%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 643.81 (+2.50%). Leading the AMBGR were ING Groep N.V. (+20.06%) and Aegon N.V. (+17.49%). Trailing the AMBGR were XL Capital (-5.08%) and Singapore Reinsurance Corp. (-3.85%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 765.31 (-1.94%). Leading the AMBGB were Maiden Holdings Ltd. (+4.33%) and Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (+2.67%). Trailing the AMBGB were National Financial Partners (-3.75%) and Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (-2.59%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 360.91 (+8.37%). Leading the AMBGML were RSA Insurance Group plc (+14.13%) and AIG (+13.04%). Trailing the AMBGML were Unitrin (-2.54%) and HCC Insurance Holdings (-2.05%).

The Global Nonlife Insurance Index (AMBGNL) closed at 773.34 (-1.21%). Leading the AMBGNL were Swiss Reinsurance (+15.81%) and Fuji Fire & Marine Insurance (+13.73%). Trailing the AMBGNL were Kingsway Financial Services (-8.86%) and OneBeacon Insurance Group Ltd. (-7.60%).

The Global Life Insurance Index (AMBGL) closed at 413.60 (+0.68%). Leading the AMBGL were Legal & General Group (+27.51%) and ING Groep N.V. (+20.06%). Trailing the AMBGL were Phoenix Cos. (-29.29%) and HealthSpring (-22.64%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 808.07 (-1.63%). Leading the AMBUPC were Affirmative Insurance Holdings Inc. (+11.83%) and Gainsco (+10.91%). Trailing the AMBUPC were OneBeacon Insurance Group Ltd. (-7.60%) and Employers Holdings (-6.79%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 100.85 (+3.08%). Leading the AMBUML were AIG (+13.04%) and Allstate (+5.12%). Trailing the AMBUML were Unitrin (-2.54%) and HCC Insurance Holdings (-2.05%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 397.62 (+2.68%). Leading the AMBUL were FBL Financial Group (+11.17%) and MetLife (+8.80%). Trailing the AMBUL were Phoenix Cos. (-29.29%) and American Equity Inv. Life (-9.33%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 469.17 (-4.02%). Leading the AMBULH were Aflac Inc. (+17.69%) and FBL Financial Group (+11.17%). Trailing the AMBULH were Phoenix Cos. (-29.29%) and HealthSpring (-22.64%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 545.27 (-8.71%). Leading the AMBUH were Aflac Inc. (+17.69%) and Unum Group (+3.97%). Trailing the AMBUH were HealthSpring (-22.64%) and Humana (-19.48%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 748.24 (-2.13%). Leading the AMBUB were Maiden Holdings Ltd. (+4.33%) and AmTrust Financial Services Inc. (+0.37%). Trailing the AMBUB were National Financial Partners (-3.75%) and Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (-2.59%).
