The technology promises to provide an alternative to carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration through the separation of that gas into its constituent components, carbon and oxygen. Pure carbon is a high value chemical, while oxygen can be safely released into the atmosphere, or used to increase power station boiler efficiency and/or contribute to the complete combustion of fossil fuels. Under the terms of the agreement, CCTI in conjunction with its technology partners, will conduct an extensive evaluation as to the technology's commercial viability.
CCTI considers CO2 separation technology to be an important compliment to its proprietary clean coal technology for the removal of harmful pollutants from coal, including mercury, sulfur, coal tars etc. prior to coal combustion. The pursuit of advanced CO2 technologies further demonstrates the company's commitment to the development of a permanent, commercially viable solution to CO2 concerns associated with coal.
Company executives stated: "These initiatives are in concert with those recently announced by the Obama administration, and could provide a compelling solution to CO2 emissions, and assist in repositioning the use of coal as a viable long term source of power generation and liquefaction, while also reducing US dependence on foreign petroleum suppliers. Our signing this global Technology Option Agreement represents a radical alternative to conventional CO2 sequestration concepts, and if proven viable, promises to establish CCTI as a leading provider of environmentally friendly solutions."
