Jenny Craig Recalls Further Products Manufactured with Ingredients from Peanut Corporation of America's Plainview Texas Facility

CARLSBAD, Calif., March 5, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- JCGI | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Jenny Craig, Inc. one of the nation's leading authorities on weight management, today announced that out of an abundance of caution it will be honoring a recall order issued by The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and further supported by the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). As such, Jenny Craig is voluntarily recalling all products manufactured with ingredients from PCA's Plainview Texas facility since that plant opened in March 2005. This represents an expansion of recall activities already associated with PCA's Blakely Georgia facility that was initiated in January. This recent announcement has impacted another manufacturer contracted by Jenny Craig for the production of certain peanut containing products, which now extends Jenny Craig's recall of product to include a product sold in Canada.

There have been no confirmed illness or adverse effects reported by any Jenny Craig customers, and no other products within the Jenny Craig food portfolio are impacted. No Salmonella contamination has been detected in Jenny Craig products. This voluntary recall is in line with FDA and CFIA recommendations, and Jenny Craig has removed all products within existing inventory.

No other peanut containing products in the Jenny Craig portfolio are manufactured with peanuts or peanut ingredients sourced from any of PCA's facilities. Date codes not mentioned above are not subject to these recalls as they were manufactured using peanuts or peanut ingredients supplied by a company other than PCA. There have been no confirmed illnesses associated with the aforementioned product date codes. No Salmonella contamination has been detected in the Jenny Craig Chocolate Caramel Peanut Bar, Peanut Butter Bar or Anytime Peanut Butter Flavor Nutritional Bars. Independent laboratory tests of PCA's peanut ingredients prior to utilization in the manufacture of Jenny Craig products indicate the ingredients were free from Salmonella. Yet, in an abundance of caution, Jenny Craig is conducting this voluntary recall in line with FDA and CFIA recommendations, and Jenny Craig has removed all products within existing inventory.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
