"The aim is to have the pipeline in operation from 2011-12," Estado reported Uniduto President Sergio Van Klaveren as saying. The pipeline will run from Brazil's main sugarcane-producing region in Sao Paulo state to the port of Santos.
Estado reported that the first phase has a budget of 1.8 billion reals ($759 million) to build 600 kilometers of pipeline.
Uniduto was created jointly by 12 groups including Cosan S/A Industria e Comercio (CSAN3.BR), Copersucar SA, Sao Martinho S/A (SMTO3.BR) and Crystalsev.
Brazil is the world's No. 1 sugar and sugarcane-based ethanol producer.
