Alpha Company is comprised of soldiers from Lowndes, Brooks, Echols and surrounding counties. The company will ship out three days after the April 8 event for 30 days of intensive training in Shelby, Miss. It will then be deployed to Afghanistan some time in May or early June, said Buddy Walker, one of the founders of the Best Buddies organization.
Chris Stewart, executive officer of the 48th Brigade Alpha Company, said their mission in Afghanistan is to embed with Afghan nationals to help train them to conduct combat missions. The bulk of the brigade will be embedded with Afghan army and police units to act as mentors.
Alpha Company will split up in teams and conduct combat missions side by side with Afghan forces, evaluating and correcting them so they can function independently.
Their work in Shelby, Miss., will consist largely of routine military training and getting all of their personnel records in order for the deployment, Stewart said, since "every time the army moves somewhere it travels on a sea of paper."
Alpha Company will also receive special instruction in cultural awareness, how to interact with senior foreign military officers, and even some language training, Stewart said.
Best Buddies has sponsored similar appreciation events in the past for Alpha Company, including homecoming parades and motorcades through downtown Valdosta, and has raised relief funds for families of Alpha Company members who have made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq.
Proceeds from the going away and appreciation supper will be placed in a military account and utilized to assist National Guard dependents while their spouses are in Afghanistan, Walker said.
"We have been at war so long in Iraq and Afghanistan that it's second nature, and the public may not realize the sacrifice that National Guard service members and their families undergo in a deployment like this," Walker said.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling J. Glenn Gregory & Associates Architects, Bennett Law Firm LLP, or The Tax Shop. The meal will be catered by Sam's Barbecue.
