Panasonic to shut down two Japanese factories

on Friday announced plans to close a chip component plant in
Kumamoto Prefecture and an electronics parts facility in Ehime
Prefecture next fiscal year. The jobs carried out at PANASONIC
SEMICONDUCTOR DISCRETE DEVICES CO.'s Kumamoto factory, which
makes chip transistors, will be transferred to sites in China
and Malaysia by September 30.

* PANASONIC SHIKOKU ELECTRONICS CO.'s Ehime facility turns
out such components as power supply units.

* Its functions will be consolidated at two other production
sites in the prefecture by the end of October.
