Corporate Center workers in limbo in Danbury

DANBURY, Apr 03, 2009 (The News-Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- UK | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Several dozen people who make their living cleaning The Corporate Center are concerned about losing their jobs.

The former Union Carbide building, which is located near Interstate 84's Exit 1, is under contract to be sold to Matrix Realty Group Inc. of New York.

Union members who have work at the building said they've received little assurance their jobs will be safe when the building changes hands. Several positions have already been posted on Monster.com.

"Nobody is really saying anything to us," said Arthur Tiscia, a city resident and a foreman of the cleaning crews. "I have two young kids to support and we need the medical benefits. It would be nice to know where we stood."

Tiscia said he and several other members of the union that represents 45 employees visited the office of Matrix Realty earlier this week to present their concerns.

"They said they didn't know what they were going to do, and they would let us know whey they did," Tiscia said.

Kurt Westby, the Connecticut director for the union -- the Service Employees International Union 32BJ -- said there is no reason for the new owners of the building to give "pink slips to hardworking staff."

"These workers depend on their jobs to support their families," he said.

Glen Nelson, the chief executive officer of Matrix Realty, said that while he understands the position the employees are in, they are still in the process of purchasing the building and haven't made any decisions yet as far as staffing.

He added the company plans to invest millions of dollars in renovating the building and hope to attract more corporations as tenants. The building is about 60 percent occupied.

"I'm confident that we can attract very large tenants to the building," he said. "Bringing more companies into Danbury will create more jobs and benefit the entire region."

State Rep. Jason Bartlett, D-Bethel, said several lawmakers from the area sent a letter to the realty company outlining their concerns for the employees.

"These are workers who punch the clock every day and rely on that income," he said. "To be replaced by non union workers would be disrespectful."
