Advanced on Wednesday bought 13 routes in the Atlanta metropolitan area -- including several in Barrow and Jackson counties -- as well as two garbage transfer stations, one in Lawrenceville and one in Smyrna.
Federal anti-monopoly regulations required Republic to sell the routes as part of its merger with Allied Waste Industries Inc.
A spokeswoman for Advanced would not say how many routes or customers the Barrow and Jackson contracts comprised.
"We purchased 13 routes in the greater Atlanta area," Mary O'Brien said. "It's in excess of 5,000 customers, but I can't say how many are in the Barrow or Jackson routes."
The company started sending letters to customers Thursday to inform them of the change in service providers.
The commercial accounts represent front-end load routes, which are collection bins typically found behind an office park or restaurant, and permanent rolloffs, which are larger, open-topped bins such as those found at construction sites but rented to manufacturers or other businesses for longer periods.
