The dinner is a way for members of the community to thank the guardsmen for their duty to country and for the sacrifices they and their families will be facing over the coming months in Afghanistan. Several members of the 48th Brigade did not make the trip home after their last deployment a few years ago to Iraq, so this courageous group should be in everyone's thoughts and prayers.
The Best Buddies have worked with the National Guard numerous times, raising money for their last deployment in order to provide each member with a calling card to phone home. The group hosts fund-raisers and other events in order to assist these men and women while they're deployed, and they also offer assistance to the family members left behind.
The city and county are co-sponsoring the dinner, which will also serve as a fund-raiser to assist the guardsmen's families while they are overseas.
The company will ship out this weekend to Camp Shelby for 30 days before deploying to Afghanistan in May or early June. Then they will work with Afghan nationals to serve as mentors and trainers, assisting them with conducting combat missions in order to make them self-reliant.
The 48th Brigade will face hardships, be deprived of the company of their loved ones, miss birthdays, holidays and anniversaries, and will face the danger daily of losing one of their own. And yet these brave guardsmen are not hesitant in their desire to serve their country.
As they leave their families here in Valdosta, let them know how much the community cares. Tickets for the dinner are $10 and can be purchased by calling J. Glenn Gregory & Associates Architects, Bennett Law Firm LLP, or the Tax Shop. The meal will be catered by Sam's Barbecue. Or you can call any of the listed businesses and offer to make a donation to Best Buddies to be used for the families.
To the members of the 48th Brigade Alpha Company and their loved ones, we wish you a safe return.
