'Microsoft claims 96% share for Windows on netbooks'
CRWHF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The Windows operating system is used on 96 percent of netbooks on the
market in the US, according to February data from market researcher
NPD, cited by Microsoft. The software giant's share of the netbook
market rose from just 10 percent in the first half of 2008, according
to a blog posting on its site. The company also pointed to consumer
dissatisfaction with alternative Linux netbooks. Both MSI, a netbook
OEM, and Canonical, the vendor supporting the commercial distribution
of Ubuntu Linux, said they saw Linux return rates four times higher
than Windows. In the UK, retailer Carphone Warehouse dropped
Linux-based netbook PCs, citing customer confusion as a reason for a
1-in-5 return rate, Microsoft said. The company said over 90 vendors
offer Windows-based netbooks, and it's also preparing its new Windows 7
to be used on the portable devices.
