With the protracted economic downturn spurring sharp production cuts in its steel, aluminum and copper operations, the steelmaker will curb hiring.
Faced with a large wave of baby boomer retirements, the firm had boosted career-track recruitment to more than 100 from fiscal 2005. Having hired 170 applicants for these positions for fiscal 2009, Kobe Steel says it has restored an age balance among its staff.
For this reason, "we'll limit (fiscal 2010 hiring) to the bare minimum," says a company official.
In fiscal 2009, Kobe Steel took on 226 employees to work at on-site at factories and other locations. While it has not set a hiring target for such workers for fiscal 2010, the steelmaker will monitor business conditions and make its decision around May.
