Apr 08, 2009 (Waterbury Republican-American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- VPS | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Watertown-based Vermont Pure Holdings Ltd. has acquired a Quincy, Mass.-based water and coffee distribution company that will add about 6,000 new customers and make it a major factor in the Boston area's bottled water market.

Vermont Pure, parent of Crystal Rock Water Co., acquired Blue Hills Spring Water Co. Inc., a company better known by its popular brand, Monadnock Mountain Spring Water, said Peter K. Baker, the company's chief executive officer.

Blue Hills produces about $3.5 million in annual revenue, making the acquisition the largest in Vermont Pure's history, Baker said. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition will add about 20 new employees, including route drivers, salesmen and service technicians, Baker said. Assets acquired in the deal range from about 25 vehicles, including delivery vans, trucks and cars, to dispensing equipment, bottles and customer lists.

Blue Hills' customers will be merged into Vermont Pure's existing operations in the Boston area, increasing the density of the company's driver routes in the market, Baker said.

"Blue Hills, through Monadnock, has been a recognized leader in the Boston bottled water market for many years and the acquisition of their customer base puts us in position to be a major player in the largest metro area in New England," he said.

"We're really excited about this one. It really puts us on the map in the Boston area and gives us a great platform from which to grow and expand."

Vermont Pure distributes natural spring water, coffee and other refreshments to homes and offices in New England, New York and New Jersey. With more than $69 million in annual sales and more than 100,000 customers, it is the largest independent and third-largest company of its kind in the nation.
